We can't really know whether he travelled there with the explicit intention to provoke a situation where he could shoot someone. I suspect he did, but at best he must have realised that taking a gun would potentially escalate the situation.

I don't think the self defence argument holds if you've deliberately provoked the situation in which you might need to use deadly force.
He worked in Kenosha. He had been working in Kenosha that day. He didn't take a gun across the state line, so I assume he had his stored with someone he knew there. He was asked to help protect a couple of businesses from 'mostly peaceful protests' and there is eyewitness accounts of him helping injured people (including protestors) with the EMT kit he was carrying, before the incident.

There is a New York Times article (hardly the White Supremacist's choice of record) that details the timeline of events using video footage. And in each shooting, he is running away from people chasing him. Also in both there are other shots being fired from other guns.

I don't think I've seen a clearer case of self-defence. They only have to show footage of people being kerb-stomped by previous protestors to within an inch of their lives to cause issue with 'beyond reasonable doubt'

There's no way they will get 1st degree homicide, so the initial set of charges look more like a political choice, than based on any of the facts.
