Just a note to anyone who has invested in a decent enough solid-state half-stack but really wants to produce a great sounding rock/metal distortion in a live gig context:

Try the Blackstar HT-DistX pedal. This thing blew me away and gave me precisely the sound I was looking for. Sounds hi-fi enough to provide chunky rhythm and searing leads but really cuts it at loud volumes. Coupled with the fact it's using a valve to assist with dynamics, it really does sound excellent.

You have a lot of control over the tone with EQ etc, and there's not a trace of fizziness that you get with a Metalzone and the like.
