I think, sadly, that the "core gamers" game Nintendo were trailing before E3 ended up being Animal Crossing. :/|
I can sort of see why they might have thought that (the Cube game was a bit of a cult hit), but it really doesn't match up to any common understanding of core gaming.
Metroid - yes.
More peripheral-based mini-games - no.
I still have some hope that Nintendo will announce some gamers' games in the future, but E3 was an opportunity missed as far as I'm concerned.
