Ok, so I'm looking for something heavy and Mogwai-esque. Mogwai as in how they used to be up to The Hawk is Howling, not the more recent electronica stuff (although I don't mind that per se; just not what I'm looking for at the moment). Post-rock/metal is what I'm after.

Oh, and I've tried Russian Circles. Other suggestions would be welcome!
Hi matey. I have been listening to loads of post rock/metal for years and have found the scene has dried up somewhat recently. I haven't heard a great new post rock or metal band for a while which is a shame because some of my favourite songs ever have come from this genre. Anyway, I hope some of these tracks bring you the same joy they've brought me over the years...

Leech - Swiss post-rock band, instrumental and absolutely exceptional. I'd go as far as to say this band are flawless, my favourite post-rock band ever I think. One of my favourite bands of all time and I know people say this all the time but this really is criminally underrated. They are excruciating slow in their build ups but the measure and control... Everytime I hear this song I get goosebumps, it's so beautiful.

Next band, Devil Sold His Soul. Not sure why I like this or identify as much as I do because the singer is so weak and that usually puts me off a band. I think it's the relentless sadness of the atmosphere that keeps me coming back, despite the overall amateurish sound. In the right mood, like I was last night after a few beers, this can be so beautiful and powerful.

I won't waste your time with Isis, I'm sure you know them. If not, check out Hall of the Dead, Grinning Mouths or In Fiction if you don't mind some growling vocals.

Next is Red Sparowes, again instrumental, you might already know them but this song is just perfection http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdz78NOLNp0 I wish they'd hurry up and write a new album!

I can't recommend God is an Astronaut too highly but this song and most of their albums bar the latest are pretty solid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKHblp1BLz0

I think the bands I've mentioned are at the top of their game of post-rock. Other post-rock/metal bands I've listened to in the past, Cult of Luna, Callisto, Mouth of the Architect, bossk etc don't quite match the standards of the truly grandiose and magnificent post-rock/metal bands. The above songs I've listened have come from someone who adores early Mogwai, especially Ratts of the Capital and Hunted by a Freak sort of sounds.

I really don't enjoy the meandering nonsense like Hammock and other 'floaty' and 'trendy' post-rock bands like Do Make Say Think. Also don't like Mono and a lot of the other bands that are considered post-rock so if anyone has any recommendations along the lines of what I posted I would love that too!

Final one, I can't resist, my band and one of our most post-rock influenced songs on our album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvapVUsMwaQ if you like Mogwai you will like this! We were really feeling the vibe of Mogwai during this song, we're all big fans.
