Ended up buying Pixeljunk Eden and, as expected, it's pretty much identical to the PS3 version but without the frustration. It's still fairly difficult near the end but the improved controls and the greatly relaxed time limits make it feel much more fair.

If anyone fancies a fairly unusual 2D platformer with lovely graphics and an excellent ambient soundtrack then I'd say to go for it. It seems a pretty good port as well, good mouse controls and no crashes in 6 hours of play. Looks like it's still 20% off as well.
