    I don't use a receiver. Now I'm worried I'm being ignorant. Why should I?

Currently I have all consoles into the TV with HDMI then optical from the TV to our soundbar. It's an LG B7 TV and we're in a relatively small living room (Where we sit on the sofa is probably just 2-3 feet away from the tv)
Well you're listening to compressed sound rather than uncompressed when you watch Blu-Rays.
    2-3 feet, seriously?
Why would going directly from BD player/console to soundbar compress the sound, as opposed to going via receiver??
Optical only supports PCM Stereo, DD5.1 and DTS, it doesn't have the bandwidth for the HD formats.
    Īsn't PCM uncompressed, though?
