    Depends how dead it is. If you can slave it, you could get the data back. Then you could wipe it and try and get the refund. Although that said, if I were to return a drive (which I wouldn't), I would run military level wiper software on it. And then set it alight. And flush the ashes.

    It's very difficult to remove data, if the person who has it is determined enough.
