Taking the examples you're speaking to: - The US has multiple 'VE days' throughout the year which manifest on a much grander scale than us over here. This is no doubt due to the cultural reverence for veterans in that country. - In Russia, there are various marches that takes place in accordance with key milestones. You can see one of these on one of Simon Reeve's documentaries. As with most topics in life, there is nuance. And VE day does not automatically translate into some jingoistic chest-beating of the United Kingdom. Of course, there are those who narrow-mindedly leverage the event to fit their agenda. But given the origins of WW2 and what it achieved, I feel VE Day is worth celebrating, at least for as long as the aforementioned veterans remain alive. |
