At some point a European Super League is inevitable I feel. Here's my idea how it could work. I know this ESL move is about money but here's a potential compromise. The top 5 leagues have their top four finishing teams promoted for the first season. 20 teams. At the end of the first season the lowest placed team from each nation gets demoted back to their top flight domestic league to be replaced by their league's winner. At this point the league expands to 21 teams and the champions League winner takes that spot regardless of nation. The ESL teams don't take part in the champions League (they can have their own cup). From then on its the bottom placed team from each nation plus the absolute bottom other team that gets relegated. 6 down per season (out of 21) is different but interesting. Leaves a pathway for other nations and satisfies the desire for a Super League while keeping the domestic leagues relevant. |
