I know contracts can be pretty complicated nowadays, perhaps there was a clause in there that allowed him to leave if Spurs didn't get into Europe (not counting the Conference League), or something along those lines? Because otherwise it would have been very stupid to tie himself down to Spurs during the prime years of his career.
