    Ignoring the specific example of this, which is an obvious outlier and that woman had a lot more going on than just a hike in her domestic outgoings....

    I generally think that if you're going to rely on the state for housing, then it is reasonable to expect housing provided in accordance to requirements. A single middle aged person having a 3 bedroom house is probably beyond what they require, and from a utilitarian point of view that would be better if that given to someone who might actually *need* it such as a young family.

    The bedroom tax is a bit of a blunt instrument, maybe there are better solutions, but the underlying principle behind the intent is fair I think.
