    It's a game that says "RPG" on the box or in the marketing.

    Nethack, Ultima IV, Ultima VII, King's Bounty, Jagged Alliance 2, Darklands, Final Fantasy X, Daggerfall, Oblivion, Torchlight, Sacred, KOTOR, Mask of the Betrayer, The Witcher, Fallout, Wizardry 8, Temple of Elemental Evil, Geneforge, Avernum, Vampire: Bloodlines, Divine Divinity, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Mass Effect, Neverwinter Nights, ADOM, Izuna, Baroque, Etrian Odyssey, Resonance of Fate, Valkyrie Profile.

    They've so little in common, you won't really do any harm just writing it off as a meaningless term and looking elsewhere to figure out whether you might like the game. There's no other reason you'd care, is there? It's no more a badge of honour than "FPS", "puzzle" or "racing".

    the_dudefather's right, though it's such a minimal definition as to be not particularly helpful, and action combat can muddy even that. Progress Quest is probably the purest in terms of what "RPG elements" and most games sold as RPGs are really primarily concerned with. espibara is wrong - Bioware RPGs have been gay puppet sex simulators for ages. Hirsute necks among audience are a good indicator, but neckbeards play Paradox games, too.
