Which Samsung do you have? The ones due for updates were all done. Sure you have enabled HDR Color on that input as per the instructions for the TV or are you going through a Reciever that doesn't support HDR pass through.

OK, so.

It really is a very nice looking console, made of great materials. I was worried about the white colour, but I quite like it.
How is it?
What can I say, it pretty much runs like the original xbox , which is a good thing.
Except now I can play UHD Blu-Rays (I watched BvS: Dawn of Justice yesterday, it looked really great in 4k).
On HDR: turns out my TV hasn't had some kind of HDR update that it needs for UHD blu-ray. Which is really annoying, as I can watch HDR content from Amazon or downloaded stuff. I have a 2015 model Samsung tv. From reading it sounds like the update was promised by Samsung, but now hasn't materialised, so I might have to swap out my 2015 model for a 2016 model (which is way cheaper than last year's already, and the diferrence between the going second hand price for my model is only a couple hundred dollars).
SO: if you are buying the S for HDR right now, only do so if you are absolutely sure your TV is HDR10 compliance.
I haven't yet done a major comparison of the upscaling to 4k. It is definitely outputting a 4K signal in games, but in my cursory switching between 1080p output (letting the TV do the upscaling) and 4k output (Xbone S doing the upscaling) I couldn't really tell a difference. I was playing Rainbow Six Siege, which has a very low resolution (900*540 something?), so was hoping it would show up there. Peformance in the game was good, but then there was also a big update for Season 3 yesterday, so could be from that.
Couple categories of potential purchasers:
- If you haven't got an Xbone yet, this is a really good time to step in.
- if you aren't hugely interested in an Xbone, you still get a UHD blu-ray player, and wider media machine (AND HALO/GEARS/FORZA)
- If you do have an Xbone, you might want to upgrade for the aesthetics, or the slight improved performance that DF found. Don't think there will be that many of you though.
- If you have an xbone, and a 4k HDR tv (or buy one alongside), then you of course the UHD blu-ray and 4k streaming services, and HDR in games.
I'm keeping my original xbone as a spare, and also so I can play co-op at home (lack of splitscreen is killing, hoping for a resurgence when console power catches up again).
On whether to just wait for Project Scorpio? I think that is a fair question, and I think it is great that MS laid out both products at the same time, so you could make your own decision. The Xbone S is an incremental upgrade. I will definitely be getting Scorpio when it comes out next year. If you don't want to spend twice / take a hit on selling the old one second hand, you will probably want to wait for Scorpio. But it is a subjective decision. |
