    DVDShrink is old now and can't rip newer copy protection. DVDFab HD Decrypter is free and will remove copy protection etc. But it's a free version of paid software, and will rip to the full size of the DVD - 8GB if it's a dual layer DVD.

    So then you need something to convert to AVI or MKV, whatever. There's loads of software that will do that, but I use an older version of Handbrake that stills rips to AVI as it's dead easy to use.

    Both pieces of software are free and as simple as it gets. Pretty much one click.
