I agree with you that it doesn't matter who the characters are.... but I did notice some character-specific dialogue between Maya and Sergeant Insubordination, because they know each other, which I hadn't seen previously at that mission because I was playing as someone else.

I've started the game from scratch, and am just milling around the church all over again, with a whole new cast of random survivors who have different skills and abilities from my last lot.
