Re Ornstein, it's probably worth it for the souls I guess. There is also an NPC past there but he wouldn't talk to me. I think it's because my magic is too low.

Actually the reason the guy won't talk to you is because you don't have a token of fidelity that you get for putting white soapstone down and successfully helping someone in their world.
