So in terms of base building, apart from the Minecraft aesthetic aspect, is there a point?

I completed the Sanctuary missions, maxed out the defence, food, water etc, fine. Past that I've not noticed the settlement being attacked and the settlers dont' seem to want for anything.

Is the idea to max out each settlements stats? I love the creative aspects of these mechanics, but all the building tools are pretty ugly. Am I missing something.

Otherwise LOVE this game.
