Studying replays I notice that people who are good get much better traction out of landings than I do. I kind of bounce around and bog down, is there a technique I'm just not getting to get smoother landings without losing so much speed?

That is a hard question to answer as it depends on the surface elevation you're landing on. You normally want to have the back wheel land first but you also need to think about what you will be taking on straight after. It isn't really the sort of thing you can teach unfortunately. It will click if you continue to try and beat your old times. Don't start off trying to beat the people on your friends list just perfect your own run first.
