Regarding the fall, I just held them up and left in a few slats below what I thought I needed. Then took the last few out one by one to get to the correct length before cutting.

Sadly that method relies on having bought blinds that are longer than the fall... I'd bought blinds that were 1 cm shorter than the fall and didn't realise until I'd already cut them to fit, so couldn't take them back. Schoolboy error...
