we waited about 8 months for our sellers as they were waiting for someone to move out to a new build and wouldn't break the chain. We had sold our house and moved in with in-laws/parents which was all a bit complicated with covid rules that kept changing. 2 days before we were due to complete our sale (having moved out to facilitate it) the buyers pulled out as they had split up. Fortunately we managed get another buyer within a week and got more money for it.
We ended up pulling out and buying a house on the opposite side of the street, which was better because it had a garden, off street parking and a cellar. We extended our mortgage once and then about 2 days after we pulled out it was cancelled.

We would probably have found something else sooner but we had some fairly specific requirements, and for about 9 months it was about the only house we could find.
