Wow, he made the best of a real bad situation. Turning back towards the airport is sometimes called the impossible turn. it's not impossible, you just need to have enough altitude to make a 360 degree turn in a glide. 270 to turn around and get back on the extended centreline, another 90 to line up. Having a good idea of what your plane is capable of at its current weight is essential for making the decision. Making the turn needs to be an instant decision, so it's always good to plan for a loss of power for every departure you make before you get to the runway. For the runway he took off from, you have 2 options, carry on ahead to the beach or turn back over the golf course. I doubt he would have made the beach as you still need to turn to land. The most dangerous part of making the turn is the risk of stalling. you can't rush the turn but you still need to make it quick. A little too much back pressure on the elevator and you can stall the inside wing in an accelerated stall, the plane will snap over and ender a spin. Judging by the damage to the aircraft, he landed really hard. One of the main gear struts collapsed and everything in front of the firewall is a mess. A wing and the tail boom shows signs of being bent. He probably stalled it trying to wrestle the plane into the clear area and dropped fairly flat, probably from about 10 to 15 feet. Looks like the lower engine mounts popped right off so nose likely impacted when the main gear collapsed. Prop looks to be in one piece so it was probably stopped before impact. |
