Transistor Nice little game. The short playtime, sparse narrative and limited RPG elements made it feel a bit insubstantial, though. 7/10 Batman: Arkham Asylum I'd seen the incredible reviews this game has gotten but I was still surprised by just how brilliant it is on every level. Genuinely one of the best games I've ever played. I loved that everything the main game has to offer to accessible. In many games it seems like optional content requires a ridiculius amount of effort to find, let alone accomplish. The Riddler's challenges in Arkham Asylum required some effort but the in-game log keeping track of the challenges made finding them eminently doable and none of them were missable. I really appreciated that. Hardcore gamers still have the punishingly difficult combat/stealth challenges outside of the main game if they wanted to devote extra time and effort to it but everything the main game had to offer was accesible without having to spend hours of additional gameplay on it. I wish more games would separate the seriously hardcore content from the main game like this. 10/10 Demon's Souls Put off playing this for a long time because of its intimidating reputation but I'm glad I finally gave it a shot. Took about 30 hours to finish. I used a walkthrough for great swathes of it and after having my ass handed to me too many times by some of the early bosses I eventually ended up looking at guides for boss battles before I'd even attempted them. I admit I used every single trick I could find to make some boss battles easy (firing arrows at Maneater before the battle begins, trapping Flamelurker behind bones and just hacking away, etc.) but I appreciated the challenge of the battles where no shortcuts existed. I think the game's difficulty has been overstated; there are lots of ways to make the game easier and more enjoyable for people who aren't interested in, or don't have the time to spend on, becoming really committed to it. It's a rare game that manages to be very difficult but never unfair, although the inability to pause the game seems like a petty cruelty even it does contribute to the tension. I became completely obsessed with this game, even turning it on before going to sleep some nights just to grind and farm items for a few minutes. It's utterly compelling, but I would say that the dread of the penalties for dying (wasted items, restarting an entire level, HP cut in half and collected souls being forfeited) incentivised me to look for shortcuts where possible and discouraged exploration. I ended up not using most of the special demon's souls I collected because I was too afraid I'd miss out on some even better upgrade, that usually never came, later in the game. 9/10 Edited by CitizenGeek at 20:53:44 31-12-2014 |
