Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes
Huge MGS fan so not sure why it's taken me this long to get around to playing Ground Zeroes. There's not a whole lot to it; main mission takes about 2 hours but could probably be finished in 30 minutes. I ended up enjoying the Extra Ops, and the PS-exclusive Déja Vu mission, more than the main mission. I liked all of the changes to the MGS formula, especially the time freeze second chance you're given when spotted by an enemy. I'm now incredibly excited for the Phantom Pain, gutted it probably won't be out until the end of the year. Would have liked more story and much less exposition through found tapes. That story-telling device is becoming way overused in videogames and it just seems really lazy. 7/10

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD
Got the MGS HD Collection last year but didn't play through Peace Walker because I'd already played it on PSP. Enjoyed Ground Zeroes so much I decided to give the HD edition a go. It's much easier than I remember it being on PSP, probably because the the DualShock is a massive improvement over the PSP. In fact, a lot about this game seems much less impressive on a console. The story is largely incoherent. Sheer implausibility of the nuclear deterrence stuff was jarring. (also, Snake knows the Boss didn't betray her country because Eva explained her mission very clearly at the end of MGS3; why is Snake haunted by doubt over this during PW, then?). Dialogue was pretty dire at times. I got the impression the writers just translated all of the humour directly from Japanese and it didn't work. The game areas seem very small on console. That said, I did enjoy the story but mainly for its continuity with MGS3, which is one of my favourite game ever. Mother Base management never became tedious, side quests were great and the boss fights were cool. I'm glad MGSV will be expanding on the changes to the series made in PW because, overall and despite the limitations of the PSP, it's a great game. 8/10
