Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain I'm a huge fan of the series and I found this to be a massive disappointment. Initial brilliance very quickly gave way to repetitive generic open world tedium. What little story there is was unforgivably terrible. Hard to overstate just how bad the story is, actually. Awful twist, almost no relevance whatsoever to the broader plot of the series, threadbare characterisation, utterly nonsensical villain, less than useless ending. To add insult to injury, this terrible, sparse plot is told in the most terrible way imaginable: collectible tapes. The only saving graces are the first few hours, where the game genuinely feels like it might be something great, and some pretty compelling stealth mechanics and design. It's incredibly obvious that the game is unfinished, but I don't think it would have been a good game even if the developers had had another year or so to spend on it. A wasted opportunity. Kojima could have built on the success of MGS4 and MGS3 and instead he made just another boring open world mediocrity. 6/10 The Last of Us: Left Behind So, so good. An excellent addition to one of the best games ever. Wish there was more of it. 9/10 |
