Nier: Automata Probably the best game I've played in years. It's just an incredible experience from start to finish and exceeds expectations over and over again. Even the credits sequence was stunning and surprising. 10/10. The Witcher 3 Undeniably a very polished game, with a strong cast and central plot and decent ARPG mechanics. However, it's still an open world game, and one of the largest ever at that, and I've come to find open world games to be extremely tedious. Most open world games reduce 'exploration' to a series of repetitive marker-chasing on a huge map, finding a slight variation on the usual get this/kill this/find this quest, and then moving on to the next marker. Most of the map is filled with nothing at all, so that actual exploration is pointless. I enjoyed this game all the same, but I really long for a day when the videogame industry gets out of this open world, quantity over quality rut. 7/10. Alien: Isolation Played this because I loved Resident Evil 7 so much and heard it was similar. The production values are amazing, and it's genuinely scary at times, but it's also about 5 chapters too long. Stealth gameplay quickly becomes a little boring when the stakes are so high, too - if you are spotted by the alien at all, it's game over immediately (more or less), so you end up spending a lot of time doing nothing hiding out in closets waiting for it to leave. It's not a patch on RE7 as survival horror goes, but definitely worthwhile. 7/10. Edited by CitizenGeek at 23:15:22 28-08-2018 |
