    Mafia 3

One of those frustrating games that is brilliant in some ways, awful in others. I think it sums up a lot of the problems of open world games in general.

On the one hand the setting and atmosphere are superb and the open world plays a big part in this. Exploring the bayou, the suburban back streets etc is one of the highlights of the game. On the other hand the usual open world AI jank breaks the atmosphere as often as it makes it.

The jank extends to the gameplay mechanics too which promise a lot but can't really deliver. It's a third person cover shooter but the camera and animations are wonky and will probably get you killed if you dive into combat. It has stealth mechanics but they are very limited and break easily. The enemy bases promise multiple approaches ala Deus Ex but really there is usually one viable option.

Which is a problem because every mission in the game is some variation of breaking into a base or a group of enemies. There are lots of them filling out the open world and they are all the same. The only changes are the occasional boss mission but these are worse, usually forcing you into a firefight against waves of enemies and a derpy camera.

I haven't played the other Mafia games but this reminded me a bit of GTA 4, a game I also had a love/hate relationship with. But it's 10 years later now so you'd hope we would have made some progress in the meantime
