Tales of Berseria (PS4) For some reason, I'd never played a Tales game before, despite liking JRPGs generally. So I picked this up cheap in a sale to give the series a try. The game is very friendly to newcomers - I never felt I was missing out by not having played previous entries. On normal difficulty, you can button mash your way through combat and blast through the main quest line if you want. It's structured like a typical JRPG - a long (50 hours for me) linear campaign to save the world, traipsing through fields, towns and dungeons, with lots of party based combat and conversations. I enjoyed learning the combat system, but wouldn't say I mastered it. It's real time and confusing at first, but after a while you learn to interpret the various sounds and visual effects to understand what's going on without watching all the details. And by understanding combos, timing, soul gauges, blast etc, you can do significantly better. On normal difficulty this means the difference between a quick victory and a slow one, but I imagine that on higher difficulties it's a lot less forgiving. Certainly it's much more interesting than Ni No Kuni 2, the most similar game I've played lately. The other standout for me was the main characters - they're all roguish misfits and it's not clear if they're "good" or "evil" even by the end of the game. It's surprisingly open to interpretation which is refreshing in a JRPG. On the other hand a lot of the banter between party members is awful, but can be skipped. Overall glad I gave it a shot and I'm interested now in that Vesperia remaster coming soon. But I'll need a bit of a break first. 8/10 |
