Finished Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana last night. It's a lot more approachable than the name suggests! This is from someone who hasn't played a game in the series before. You are shipwrecked on a mysterious island and explore it to recruit a crew, build a base, and eventually figure out a way to leave. The island is divided into fields and dungeons that you explore in a fixed order in the usual JRPG fashion. Combat is fast and real time, almost like an action game rather than an RPG, although you still have stats and skills to level up. In fact the whole game is very streamlined, letting you instantly fast travel between areas you've visited and requiring no grinding at all. The base building is also well done as you discover new companions to populate it and provide meaningful new abilities and upgrades. Some of these characters are a bit dubious, and the story leans on some well worn tropes, but the whole game is suffused with that classic, colourful JRPG joy and charm. Happy days! 9/10 |
