Control - Big fan of Remedy, but this didn't grab me at launch. Muted hype train, generic looking endless offices as the "world", a single weapon.. with different modes fire, with gameplay looking like all their ideas left over from quantum break..

But after now trying and finishing it, I loved it. I lapped up the story and all the work gone into the world building and the underlying mystery that went with it. I even enjoyed the collectables explanding the story, complete with audio recordings and live action videos using a greatest hits of Remedy voice actors, including Max Payne and Alan Wake.

I'd argue though, that if you're not invested in the story, it could be easy to tire of the game. When all the abilities come togther with the level of detailed destruction allowed, it feels great. But much of the combat is done at range, at speed and in similar surroundings.. so It can feel samey. It's still satisfying and there's clearly nuances put into the various enemies, but when 95% of them are solders than can be killed before then come remotely close using the starter weapon or launch/throw a ability, it can feel a bit like a shooting gallery.

All that said, if you like the idea of Psi-Ops The Mindgate Conspiracy turned up to 11 with Sam Lake going absolutely nuts with the story side of things, fill your boots.

    8/10
