    Spiritfarer

A game too focused on getting in its own way to let you have real fun with it. It's just marred with endless busy work, fetch quests and poor game design. A fair few quests will have you go back and forth between locations just to pick up a few lines of meaningless dialog each way.
While other games sort of ease your load as you go on, Spiritfarer just increases it, giving you more and more basic tasks that are minor variations of the things you did before.

For a game about passing on, it'd be nice if everything wasn't quite so formulaic too. Each spirit follows the same general pattern, and they'll all drip feed you bits of their story to piece together. Nothing really wrong with that, but it makes it harder to care, especially when the art book has much more interesting information on the characters and their past.
I wasn't a fan of much of the writing, but I warmed up to some of it, and I did particularly like the last sequences.

It's a shame, because there's a lot of things to like here and a good game under there somewhere. I found myself quite enjoying it during the final stretch, where I had most things done and little to grind for. It doesn't make up for what came before though. The entire feeding mechanic is absolute filler and can shove it.

It describes itself as "cozy", perhaps if ticking things off a checklist is cozy to you you'll like it. I didn't hate it, but I'm underwhelmed, and a bit baffled by the praise.
