The Medium (Xbox) First game I've finished for ages. There's a lot to like. It's a love letter to late 1990s horror games, with all the spook and jankiness that entails. Great atmosphere and mystery that pulls you through the narrative. At times the graphics are excellent, at times not so much - the split screen parts obviously impact resolution and performance but nothing terribly so. Ray tracing is so subtle that you've got to be really looking to spot where it is, which I think is actually quite natural. The gameplay and puzzles do not engage, even exploration is utterly basic. Voice acting is acceptable (even Troy Baker chewing the scenery), and the music is decent enough although the fact some of it is by Akira Yamaoka left me a little deflated that it wasn't totally outstanding. Overall I guess I liked it enough to finish it. The greatest downfall it has are terrible controls at times, and baffling gameplay decisions. 6/10. I worry that if the rumours of Konami teaming with Bloober to potentially reboot Silent Hill are true, they simply won't be up to the job. I heard someone mention that Tango Gameworks would be a much better fit, and I would agree based on what I've played here. Edited by daver at 01:23:01 01-07-2021 |
