Himeji Castle and Nara were highlights for us too.
If you go to Japan and stay in Osaka and don't see one or both of these there is little hope for you imo.

If you stay more than two nights in Kyoto outside festival season you need a new brain!
I did both, so there is no hope for me and I need a new brain :|
Sorry I didn't mean to be rude :)

It's just after living there for so many years (and advising others ever since, wherever I can) I can get quite 'short' with folk, but I should know better and be more understanding.

Kyoto is a horrible place imo. There are nice temples (even fantastic) of course but the overall feel of the place (if you are sensitive to such things) is just completely off, especially in Japanese. The locals are famous for being cold and heartless in Japan, and I can't say I blame them really for what their city's been turned into. There are lovely temples but so much of it is concreted and filled with McDonalds etc (if you research the central train station it will give you much of an idea of how wrong things have been).

One night in Nara is worth a thousand in Kyoto for me.
