Thanks to user Jaangus in the 'rate the last television series' thread, I decided to watch this based on his recommendation before being able to watch the entirety of Better Call Saul, in which only the first two episodes are available on iTunes. I am well aware that this may well be a very niche television series, what with it being an Italian TV show and is relatively unheard of in comparison to something like Spiral, The Killing or The Bridge. I guess it would be nice to think that some of you have watched this too, as it such a genuinely gripping I-need-to-know-what-happens-next show and is filmed in a very stylish manner. Last year gave us the likes of Fargo and True Detective and I can honestly say that Gomorrah is just as good as those two, and I LOVED those two series! ... however, I am currently in a predicament with this television series at the moment though, for one reason and one reason alone: Nobody, not a single character on the show is likeable. I am on episode nine (of twelve) and the episode in question that I watched yesterday evening made me wonder if there is any fundamental goodness to come out of watching this. I mean, and these are not spoilers: - About forty or fifty black Italian men and women getting murdered for no good reason other than the head of the (drug) business disliking black people. Obviously we know that Italy today still has a sadly needless dislike for black people, but this was a shock to see. - Innocent bystanders being shot in cold blood whom have nothing of relevance or consequence to the drug business just to 'prove a point' that they can shoot innocent bystanders. - The main boss, Pietro Savastano, is a man with no redeeming qualities. His wife, Lady Imma is just as cold, distance and ruthless as he is. - Genny, the son of the main boss, is also a man with no redeeming qualities, especially in the second half of the series. - Ciro, the main character so to speak, is the one we should technically be rooting for however, just to be on the safe side (with regards to spoilers), Ciro asks a young boy to kill another man who is a fairly big fish in the pond and since the young boy finds out that they were going to kill him afterwards, Ciro finds his girlfriend, beats her up, uses weapons on her then burns her alive... Therefore one can only ponder which side the viewer is supposed to be on - if any - and since every character is particularly horrible, what are we as a viewer supposed to get out of this? I know that Walter White in Breaking Bad is an example of being an unlikeable character however, he is surrounded by both good and bad people, of whom are in good and bad situations. Gomorrah is the opposite of this; everybody seems to be bad and are in an equally bad situation. Not sure what to make of this series just yet, but I do thoroughly hope that the remaining episodes sheds some much needed light in an otherwise very dark world. Anyone else watched - or is watching - this by any (slim) chance? Edited by CharlieStCloud at 18:50:00 23-02-2015 |
