What are the opinions on best guns?

So far I have had success with the shotguns. Not knowing the maps makes the long range guns something for much later. Unlocked the Mastiff and it has a flat horizontal spread makes aiming unimportant and kills in one or two shots. Usually enough to beat the spray and pray guys.

Are the Titans "rock, paper, Scissors" or is it skill based?
