Hi guys. I'd like some help.

I haven't played a computer game in about six years (other than football manager occasionally) but today I woke up and decided I'd like to play something. I don't know what though. I quit gaming because I was bored of it. I know good games exist, but I think they're rare (I'm a big fat snob), and finding them is hard. I'm hoping that, if I describe what games I liked, and what games interested me before I became out of the loop, you guys might be able to help with suggestions? I hope that's not a crap request.

I played a lot of shit which I liked when I was younger but which I don't think I would like now. Final Fantasy (boring and stupid), Metal Gear Solid (ridiculous story), Pokémon (addictive more than anything), Elder Scrolls (can't be arsed with potions and levelling up), Civilization 3 (time is of the essence, and this shit aint the essence of life), Deus Ex (adored it at the time, but, it's a bit silly and crap in a lot of ways).

Games which I liked and which I think I would still like: Majora's Mask (it's really smart what happens with time), F-Zero X (it was really fast), Shadow of the Colossus (it felt cool), Goldeneye ("grenade launcher, yes blud!"), one of the versions of Splinter Cell where you could play co-op (the light, the tactics of it, the teamwork, it felt clever), Wind Waker (it's beautiful), Broken Sword (it's charming).

Games which appealed to me from afar: Pathologic (same deal as Majora's Mask but I hear it's really, really flawed), Eve Online (it looks like it could be quite soothing and interesting escapism, but I could never commit that much time), Portal (for obvious reasons), Left 4 Dead 2 (co-op that looked fun and smart).

I realise that list is quite long, boring, and actually very limited, but it was useful for me to think about. I guess I want this from a game: I want it to be smart, inventive, and I would like it to make me think...I don't want it to be long, boring, addictive, and to have pretensions of being clever and 'adult' when really it's just dark and silly. Also co-op has the potential to be cool. A smart, clever and not silly adventure game is what I'm feeling at the moment.

So yeah, this is a bit of a vague thread, but if you can help that'd be great.
