Well after everyone spurning my hideous squid-faced charms my only option was to turn into a despot.

Nearby militant xenophobes subdued and vassalised. One of them assimilated (took decades) and genetically engineered to be a little less pissy.

Nuclear-age civ infiltrated and assimilated because they happened to be in a system with strategic resources I didn't want to lose when they made it into space.

Bugs are starting to take the shine off now.

Nearby potential ally stuck in an endless war with a one-planet civ. They keep sending occupying troops and nothing happens after they're dropped off.

Genetically engineered my race to get rid of "repulsive" trait and it still show up in diplomacy scores.
