I thought that the emperor figure was incorporeal? So the blue stuff flying about was his essence and he then went to that mood light planet Nick mentioned and inhabited another clone?

Only he was weakened by the whole ordeal, spent a few decades making model ships out of dirt (turned out he had the scale wrong) and then wanted to take over Rey's body, which would have worked if she struck him down?
