Cap and Tony's heroic arcs cross during the course of the MCU and each ends where the other begins. They're both morally "Good." characters, but Tony starts from a selfish, anti-authoritarian position and Steve from a selfless, follow the chain of command one. Tony becomes more willing to submit to authority (specifically during Civil War), whereas Steve becomes more sceptical, moving to an Objectivist "Those who can act, have the authority to act." moral position.

In the end, Tony makes the sacrifice that Steve accuses him of being unwilling to make in Avengers Assemble and Steve undoes the sacrifice he made at the end of The First Avenger.
