Republicans face a demographic crisis, and have done since the early 80s/90s. The people they use as targets of bad behaviour are, increasingly, becoming the largest bloc of voters.

Without Republican prison/legal policy there would be about 15 million more "African American" (I find the term offensive, hence the quotes) potential voters. This was facilitated by incarcerating young black men in a system that was stacked against them from Kindergarten.

The "Latino" vote (and I use quotes because it's a stupid term that barely scrapes the cultural landscape encompassed) will mean that in the next couple of decades whole South American countries will be re-defined by Republicans as "white", regardless of skin tone. It's the only way they'll get new votes.

Gerrymandering was a first shot across the bows of Democracy. I'm sure plenty of people figured out how re-districting could be used to influence elections, but it took the Republican party to make it a manifesto.

They'll use any crack or chink in the system to find an advantage, and all they'll be met by is disappointed Democrats who hoped they'd DO better.
