I didn't expect so much hate for this film. Personally I think it's fantastic even with some questionable choices and plot holes.
As to the two characters who are poorly fleshed out in going to go out on a limb here and say we knew fuck all about the emperor and he died of similar stupid reasons as he failed to foresee vader turning. As for phasma...just a huge waste considering she got bested by a janitor

As for kylo not knowing luke was projecting himself that's a weakness he has from lines training not focusing on what's happening in the present what's right in front of him in the here and now.

Also I think the whole film is a cocos decision to move star wars on after the love letter of tea.
As kylo says forget the past kill it if you need to.
