We have a house rule for when we started playing. If we got confused on a rule or a technicality and couldn't find the answer in the PHB in 30 seconds, we wrote it down for a follow up and the DM used their best judgement to decide if it succeeded or not. When starting, getting obsessed about this or that rule can really break the fun apart as you're pausing too often, especially in encounters.

    definitely this!

a big advantage/disadvantage of older editions of D&D compared with the newer ones is that there simply aren't rules for lots of situations, so the DM ends up making up rulings for loads of stuff as you go along, saving loads of time spent flicking through books.
