I have all three characters at level 305 now, and there was no grinding involved.

Step 1: Play one character through the campaign. Then do all of the adventures.
Congratulations, you have finished almost all of the Destiny 2 Vanilla story.

Step 2: Do all of the exotic quests. Then do your milestones. Then do Rat King. When your glimmer gets out of control, buy mods, mods and more mods. When Xur comes, buy anything he has that you don't.

Step 3: Play your second character through the main campaign. Then move all of your best weapons over to raise that character's power. Then play upgrade point adventures, heroic public events and loot lost sectors until you have unlocked all three subclasses.

Step 4: Milestones, exotic quests. You'll probably be 280 now. Congrats, you can now get to 285 relatively easily with mods.

Step 5: Do the same as before with character 3.

Step 6: When milestones update, do them. In your downtime, play Destiny 1.
