If you give him the benefit of the doubt it sounds like he's basically explained poorly that he doesn't use the slur but told his daughter a joke with the word in it recently, referencing a film of his for context where it's used, and she took offence and wrote him a letter.

I think this is pretty much exactly what happened. He was an
absolute idiot to talk about it unprompted, and I'm sure it will be forgotten, but I don't get the impression Matt Damon is fundamentally a bad guy. He comes across (far as I can tell given I've obviously never met him), as broadly a decent guy, trying to do the right thing, but perhaps a bit naive, when handling the media.

Even some of the most "woke" people I know have laughed at a non-PC or inappropriate joke at some point for example, but it doesn't reflect their general political views and as a celeb you certainly shouldn't be broadcasting the fact as it's inviting obvious controversy.
