I totally get what you mean, but a girl that I used to go out with went out with some friends one night. She was a bit skint, but didn't want to bail. So she went, skipped starter and got pasta. All her friends got starters, steaks, and a rake of beers. At the end of the night they said to split the bill, and she was to embarrassed to say no. Bunch of absolute cunts.

If everyone has spent similar money, sure, split the bill. But fuck paying for people's steak and beer when you'd just had a plate of pasta.

Must admit, a personal pet hate is when people bring out the calculators for splitting a bill. Sometimes I gain, sometimes I lose, but I'll always pay an equal cut, even if for example, I'm driving and have a coke, whilst everyone else is hammering the booze.

That said, the example above is people taking the piss. I, possibly even sub-conciously, find myself ordering food broadly aligned to the others. If I'm at a table of 4 and 3 order pasta and skip starter, I'd be highly unlikely to order the king prawn starter and filet steak main. In such an extreme example as above, I'd also insist on the individual not paying an equal cut. They could cover their bill and we'd just do an equal split of the remaining 3, even thought we'd have some variance.
