Seriously fuck the Tories, If they could whip people into work they would. Taken from Private eye - Gravy train restarts... "EMPLOYMENT secretary Thérèse Coffey is to tackle the looming unemployment crisis by reviving a privatised “welfare-to-work” scheme from 2011 that was marred by poor results, corruption, exploitation of the unemployed and the collapse of leading providers. Under Coffey's £2.9bn Restart scheme, contractors will help unemployed people who have been on Universal Credit for more than a year into work using job coaches, training and work placements, on a paid-by-results basis. This seems very similar to the Work Programme, set up under the coalition after the economic crisis and judged by the National Audit Office to have had a “poor start" and performed "less than(the) original forecast". Bids for 12 regional “packages” are being invited from 14 companies on a pre-approved list, implying less-than-fierce competition among some familiar firms - including Serco, Capita and G4S, all of which have already cashed in on Covid-19 contracts with varied success. Also on the list is People Plus Group, a company formed out of the scandal-hit A4e, and Maximus, the US firm which runs much-criticised disability benefit evaluations. No worries there, then" |
