The whole "woke" term seems to have been invented by the right as a way of dismissing anyone who takes issue with anything racist, homophobic or just any idea bordering even slightly progressive that threaten those in power. Just using this one word, it's kinda scary how simple it is for the media to set the tone. A huge portion of the population either don't watch the news or (in the case of the older working class) still get it from the likes of the Sun or Mail and have for decades. For my own father and others like him, it's not even seen as right wing to them, it's like listening to a friend down the pub its been a part of their lives for so long. Between the media and the Tories, they've managed to appeal to and fuel peoples worst instincts to cling to power. Creating division and suspicion while telling them that anyone disagreeing are simply "woke" rather than have a discussion or educate themselves. All the while corruption, racism and xenophobia are almost supposed to be expected. As a way of merging the Tories with UKIP to keep the working class on-side despite ripping apart public services, it's almost genius. But it's so so depressing seeing the direction our society is going. Edited by Anthony_UK at 16:09:24 07-05-2021 |
