The current political situation here feels like natural ramification of 35 years of 'no such thing as society'. I think the UK is following in the footsteps of the highly, pathologically, individual focused USA and that mindset means we're going to see more inequality, more hoarding, less concern for others (outside of friends and family). And as long as taxes stay low and people can afford to go out on a weekend and have a holiday in the sun I don't see that changing. I think that stubborn individualism is why we and the US struggled with COVID so much. |
