@RyanDS the new controllers are more complicated than any previous gen ones, but I've taken mine apart without too much fuss (following an unfortunate incident with my youngest and a glass of orange juice).

From the sound of things, there's something caught in the button mechanism, but you will need to remove quite a few components before you can get to that and fix things.
