Don't come at my carrying torches but I've never read the books.
I've watched Lynch's movie about 5 times I and really enjoy it.
But to right a wrong done so long ago, I decided to buy the buy deluxe edition so I'm looking forward on starting my Dune journey.
I started reading the first book a couple of weeks ago in preparation for the new film and so far I'm really loving it. Detailed world building and big, slightly mad ideas. Also it feels surprisingly modern considering it's 55 years old. Kind of like Game of Thrones in space.

Not sure about moving on to the other books, though. I've heard they get increasingly rubbish as they go on.
