I think the latest Windows 10 update allows full screen apps (games) split across two monitors to run at separate refresh rates, so based on that I think you’d be fine to have one 144Hz monitor and one 60Hz monitor running their respective refresh rates for work/desktop.
Thank you - everything I have read on the subject in terms of forum posts seems to be largely between 3 and 5 years old and I wasn't sure if things had been "fixed" more recently. There did seem to be a problem particularly with Nvidia cards as well, from what I could surmise.

I understand that with the latest updates to Windows I should be fine as long as games are running in full screen mode as the jury still seems to be out on borderless window mode. Like I said, I couldn't see me using the two screens for gaming given the disparity in the refresh rates, I just didn't want to find that my shiny new 144Hz monitor was effectively "stuck" at 60Hz all the time.

Thanks to everyone else that responded - I realised it was nearly a decade since my last post but I (correctly) assumed I would be more likely to get an informed, quick and helpful answer here!
